Brian Milligan Associates are environmental consultants specialising in occupational hygiene and workplace health and safety. Drawing upon years of industry experience, we're able to help bring your business in line with the legislation and directives that apply to your specific field of operation. We know that dealing with health and safety procedures can cause headaches. There are never enough hours in the working day, and getting on with the day to day operation of the business is often the primary concern. Yet it cannot be ignored. Correctly implemented health and safety procedures ensure compliance with the law, and they also create a safer working environment for your employees. Dust, fumes, chemicals and noise are more than just annoyances. They pose serious health risks, and an uncomfortable working environment can have implications on staff morale.
That's where we step in. We can advise on all matters relating to environmental and occupational hygiene, ensuring legal compliance and minimising accidents and illness. We'll quickly identify the hazards, assess the risks, and then propose suitable methods of controlling them. All of our services are carried out by experienced professionals with considerable knowledge of health and safety law and an in-depth understanding of the industry that you operate in. Risk assessment is carried out by measuring employee exposure to a chemical, physical or biological agent through personal monitoring. We also measure the conditions of specific areas in the workplaces by monitoring a localised sector. The results are then evaluated and contrasted against the relevant legal and scientific standards.

We have a considerable amount of experience in measuring employee exposure to airborne contaminants, including visible hazards such as wood dust or flour dust and more insidious ones such as isocyanates or hexavalent chromium. Air sampling surveys involve company employees wearing personal sampling equipment that consists of a battery operated pump which draws air through a medium (such a molecular sieve) to collect airborne contaminants. These can then be analysed in a laboratory to determine the dangers of exposure. Air sampling is often required as part of a COSHH assessment.

Every year, approximately 2% of the UK workforce is affected by occupational illness, and many of these cases stem from exposure to chemical agents, dusts, mists, vapours, fumes and gases. COSHH regulations stipulate that all employers must assess the risks of exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace.
Brian Milligan Associates can guide you through the various steps you need to take to ensure compliance. They include:
Identification of toxic or harmful substances
Assessment of the degree of exposure
Evaluation of control measures already in place
Recommendations for improved control
Whether you require assistance with just one of these steps or all of them, we're able to provide a tailored solution that matches your needs.
The law specifies that all Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) Systems - whether it's a spray booth, welding hood, exhaust slot on a degreasing bath, or even a larger multi-point system; must be meticulously examined and tested at least every 14 months. Typical test parameters include visual inspection for damage or corrosion, pressure drop monitoring across the fan, bag filters or other arrestment plant, and air flow testing through the main system, branch ducts and booth face.

Emissions testing is an obligatory procedure for many companies that have a polluting manufacturing process. This involves measuring the concentration of gases or particulate matter in the gas steam as it leaves your plant into the atmosphere. Common substances which require strict control include particulates, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, ammonia and nitrogen oxides, though there many other which also need to be measured.
