Products

Glenelg Design Ltd is a well-established design consultancy with over 20 years of experience in product and packaging design solutions. We work with some of the biggest local and international clients including Nintendo, GHD and ICI. Our client list is an enviable one and our innovative concepts have helped to make us a recognised UK market leader in this field.

Our long stand relationships with major multinational companies are a testament to the unique product development and design solutions we supply to our clients. We collaborate with our clients from the inception to the completion of projects to ensure we understand and meet their strategic business objectives.

Glenelg Design boasts a state of the art design and CAD studio, which is complemented by our fully equipped workshop facility. We have the capabilities to develop rig models to test theories as well as the ability to produce presentation and functional models for the testing of product manufacture and aesthetics.

Innovative Concept Generation

Our team of experienced designers will follow a basic process after engaging with clients and receiving their brief. We start by visualising as many ideas as possible to ensure we can work up a number of concepts that are innovative yet realistic. The ideas and creative thinking stage is one of the most important parts of our process. From this base we can then assess any constraints and evaluate against our screening criteria. The next step will be to present our lead concepts and define the key attributes that we feel are the closest to the best end product possible.

Concept Development

During the concept development stage we will work very closely with our clients. This is to ensure our design proposals adhere to the client’s financial goals as well as meeting their commercial constraints. We will optimise the design detail based on client feedback in order to ensure their requirements are being met. We use a number of methods to ensure that our concept is the best design possible and this will include the use of visuals, prototypes and models. We may also conduct qualitative consumer and customer research as part of our testing process.

2D and 3D CAD

Our five very experienced computer aided design (CAD) engineers are an important part of our design process. We 3D CAD all of the design components in a product assembly in order to produce presentation models in stereo lithography. We are then able to test the product assembly and function before the tooling investment begins. The manufacturer can then use a combination of 2D and 3D CAD to produce the individual components during the assembly. Our CAD engineers have a combined total of over 70 years of experience when it comes to detailing for manufacture and they are an integral part of the design process.

Visualisation

At Glenelg Design our use of rendered images is a standard part of our design process. We use still images as well as animation in order to visualise our concepts. This also helps our clients obtain a clear and precise understanding of the product design principles, working mechanisms and aesthetics. Our use of animation is an important part of the visualisation process as we can supply full details and visuals that will help the client to view how the end product will look. This is also a way to provide product visualisations without the requirement of the expense of a fully working model.

Product Testing Services

We use product testing to assess performance criteria where critical design features are identified. With full workshop capabilities, testing equipment and an experienced team we can rigorously assess issues such as the theoretical structural design qualities as well as the predicted performance of the end product. We use Finite Element Analysis (FEA) during our testing process to obtain these critical test results. Glenelg Design has over 20 years of testing design features for major companies such as GHD styling products, Raytec CCTV and Nintendo, to name just a few. This is one of the most important aspects of the design process used to ensure that we meet client objectives.

Presentation Modelling

Prototyping is one of the parts of the design process that enables our clients to have maximum confidence in not only the design aesthetic but also the product function. We can create presentation models from our 3D CAD and lithographed models as well as arranging to have the product components manufactured. The prototype will be almost indistinguishable from the actual product that will be manufactured. Many clients do want to view a fully functioning prototype before they proceed on to the high investment required during the injection mould and production process. In the past we have supplied GHD with 30 working prototypes. These prototypes were then used during market research and product testing.

Project Management

Glenelg Design has the capabilities to take complete control of the client work program through to the point of manufacture. We are fully experienced in project management including design and commercialisation. We will usually work and liaise with our client’s project manager throughout the process to ensure that all objectives and goals are being met. Our project management service can include obtaining quotes, liaising with toolmakers including tool trials as well as production line trials. We have provided our project management service for many local, national and international companies, and this is a cost effective service for our clients.
