Based in Dewsbury in West Yorkshire, C Perkin Ltd was started by Jospeh Perkin in 1860, who began by manufacturing engineers’ hand tools. By 1900, Joseph, who by this point had been joined by John Perkin were making machine tools. The first Perkin spiral paper tube machine was introduced by Leonard Perkin in 1930 and from there ancillary equipment was incorporated into the range.
Cardboard tube could be used for holding items such as powders or sweets and with the use of lid forming and closing machines the tubing became multi-functional and this technology was utilised during the war to make shell canisters.
John Kenneth Perkin, who joined in 1948, took the company through the rapid expansion in the plastics industry that occurred in the 1950’s and 1960’s, when there were a multitude of requests for paper tube.
In 1970, Colin Perkin joined the company and he introduced many new developments including machines that were suitable for packaging explosives for the mining industry and plants for the textile industry that could make cardboard texturing and spinning tubes. At this time the composite container was also introduced to help with the packaging of more awkward products and drinks containers. We have since developed this area further and continually look for ways to expand the composite can and textile tube markets.
Now, more than 100 years after the inception of our company we are a world leader in spiral paper tube winding, cutting and labelling.
We have a large range of Perkin Falcon Core cutters available and there are two main types; a manual feed and an automatic hopper. The manual feed features a long core that is positioned in the loading vee and then pushed by hand into a pneumatic chuck. The machine is fully programmable and the number of cuts and cut length is inputted into the console and once the start button has been activated it automatically carries out the instructions. The automatic hopper has 10 programmes which can be pre-selected and stored, within each programme there is the option for 5 selections of cut lengths and number of cuts. At any time the programme can be paused so that changes can be made to the current programme or so it can be switched to an entirely different programme. The system also boasts an easy to use touch screen panel.
Perkin’s Single Opposed Knife High Speed Core Winder, provides high speed production of small diameter, thin wall cardboard tubes. The machine is compact, fast and uses a servo drive motor for cut off. The encoder will measure the speed of the inside ply negating the need to have to set a target or photo-cell. The core inside diameter and the width of the inside ply entered on the keypad synchronises with the cutting unit to the core speed. The machinist can check the length after the initial cut and make any final adjustments; once this has been done the length will remain precise during the speed range.
At Perkin we can provide a range of labellers that are able to label composite can bodies and cardboard tubes. The CL2 composite can labelling machine has knives and will accept up to roughly unlabelled 10 tubes in its tube guides. Once the tube has been loaded on to the mandrel, an unglued label is taken from the feed table and attached using precious glue rollers and pickers, the tube is then cut and ejected from the machine and the process is repeated. There is a choice of different models available in this range including an automatic sheet label feed and a tube hopper, which is a fully automatic machine. We also have the ACL 200 Composite Can Labeller and Recutting Machine, which can label up to 35 tubers per minute.
The Perkin Slitter/Rewinder only has one shaft rewinding which makes it an incredibly efficient and easy way to slit board. The frame is sturdy and has been pre-fabricated to ensure that it does not vibrate when being used at top speeds. The Slitter/Rewinder comes fitted with a special rubber ‘banana’ shaft bow spreader and will also amend the pressure at the bottom of the roll to guarantee that each finished roll is separated and is rewound to the highest standard. The machine has a maximum rewind speed of 600 meters/minute at 600mm diameter.
Our Paper End Machines, with Glued and Curled Paper End, feature spray lubricated curl tools, servo drives for rapid action and closed loop control, indexing turrets at each stage of the can motion, a touch screen user interface, rapid tooling change facility and adjustable depth of curl and tool rotation speed.
Once the cut and labelled cores are fed to the capping machine, they end on I.E. standing upright. The machine’s servo controlled indexing sprocket then moves the cores through four stations: flange, glue, insert cap and curl. The machine can process a maximum number of 60 tubes per minute. Our fantastic servo knife units are incredibly easy to operate via their touch screen keypads. Users of these machines simply enter the core inside diameter and the width of the inside ply on the screen in order to synchronise the cutting unit to the core speed. Users can then input the cut length required. If cut length and/or speed needs to be adjusted once the machine is running, this is also easy to achieve via the touch screen interface.
