The main building of Aston University is a landmark property located within the Aston Triangle on the
fringe of Birmingham city centre. It is bounded to the west by the A38 Aston Expressway which is the principal arterial route from the M6 motorway into the city centre.
The main building was constructed in the 1950's. It is eight stories high, including the basement and
is built around a large central courtyard. It was extended with the addition of wings to the north and
south during the 1970's. Construction of the main building is believed to comprise a concrete encased steel structural frame clad with stonework at ground level and brickwork above
A condition survey undertaken of the external brickwork has identified numerous areas of cracking and deterioration to the brickwork ranging in severity, which have been priority coded by the University.
The project works comprise the repair of the RED coded locations identified.
The final repair solution for the works is not known at this time and an indicative repair solution and areas has been included in the tender documents for pricing purposes. At each location the contractor will need to open up the work area and provide access for inspection by the project Structural Engineers to confirm the proposed repair detail. The works cost will be adjusted based on the final repair detail.
