Midlands based Train-a-Lift is the UKs largest independent training centre and provides the industry with first class fork lift training and mechanical handling equipment safety training.

Here at Train-a-Lift we have been providing training services to the industry for more than 30 years. We cater to a range of small companies with basic requirements through to large companies such as Jaguar, Land Rover and Rolls Royce who require a larger scale, volume training.

Our forklift truck operator training courses and instructors are independently accredited by ITSSAR (recognised accrediting body) and we are also quality assessed to BS EN ISO 9001:2008 by BVQI.

We are JAUPT approved for LGV Driver Certificate of Professional Competence and our lorry loader courses can be accredited by ALLMI (Association of Lorry Loader Manufacturers and Importers).

Responsibilities of the Employer / Manager of Lifting Equipment Operators

This course provides individuals with the information and guidance needed to understand and comply with the legal obligations of employers/ managers/ supervisors of fork lift truck operators under the Health and Safety at Work Act. The course runs for one day and is carried out on customers’ premises. Each course is tailored to suit customer requirements covering areas of lifting and equipment that are relevant to the specific business and customer (eg. forklift trucks, overhead cranes, hiabs and construction equipment). TAL certificates of training are provided as a record of training achievement.

Forklift Truck Instructor/Examiner 10 Day Course

This 10 day course provides individuals with all the skills necessary to become a forklift truck instructor/ examiner. We provide information about different types of machines and the methods and techniques needed for the qualified instruction, training, assessment and certification of lift truck operators in accordance with the requirements and recommendations of the Health and Safety Commission (HSC). Successful delegates are registered and certificated on the ITSSAR National Register of Accredited Instructors as well as entered on the TAL Register of Approved FLT Instructors/ Examiners.

Instructor/Examiner 5 Day Instructional Techniques & Methods Course

On completion of this five day course, delegates will understand the role of the instructor and will have covered principles of learning and instruction, simple task analysis, lesson types and structure. Our instructors provide extensive coverage on how to create effective lesson plans and demonstrations as well as assessing, recording, reporting safety as an instructor, practise lessons and ongoing assessment. Delegates are assessed in the following areas:

  • Preparing/ Presenting Classroom lessons
  • Preparing/ Presenting of Demonstrations
  • Preparing/ Presenting of Practical Instruction
  • Constructing/ Conducting Practical Skills Test
  • Report Writing
  • Knowledge of Instructional Methods and Techniques.
     

Forklift Truck Operator 1 Day Refresher

This refresher course is aimed for individuals who wish to keep their skills up to date. Running for one day, either on the customer’s premises or at our centre in Coventry, delegates will complete a theory test and receive specialist training covering topics such as driving and steering, stacking, destacking, load handling and the fitting and use of attachments. Our instructors tailor courses to cover lift trucks that suit the individual (eg reach trucks, electric and ICE counterbalance machines, order pickers, masted and variable reach rough terrain lift trucks, pedestrian machines and tow tractors). On completion, a Certificate of Training in Basic Practical Skill and Ability is awarded.

Abrasive Wheel Training Air Tool Training Operator ½ and 1 Day

This course runs for half a day or a full day depending on requirements and provides users with the knowledge and skills needed to safely set up and operate abrasive wheels cutting discs and various air powered tools. Our instructors will ensure delegates understand how to safely store, handle, test, mount and balance the wheels. This course is held at customer premises and appropriate machines and air tools/ abrasive wheels and dressing tools should be available for training purposes. A TAL Certificate of Training is awarded as a record of achievement.

Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) Courses

Driver Certificates of Professional Competence (CPC) is now a mandatory requirement. This means new lorry drivers must pass an initial qualification in order to gain their vocational driving licence and qualify for their Driver CPC. New drivers must carry out a minimum of 35 hours periodic training to retain their CPC. We offer a range of courses designed to count towards the 35 hours of continued professional development. Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) Order Picker Course

This course provides delegates with the skills needed to safely operate a narrow aisle order picker (man up or man down). Our instructor provides all the basic skill requirements associated with these types of machines. The course covers rated capacities for stability and instability, operating and site safety codes, machine introduction, daily checks, basic and advanced steering/ manoeuvring in both open area and aisle, hydraulic controls, basic and advanced load handling and order picking, emergency procedures and more. The course lasts from one to six days depending on previous experience.

Lorry Mounted & Mobile Crane Operating Safety Course

This course is designed to provide delegates with the knowledge and skills to operate a lorry mounted/mobile crane safely and efficiently. Delegates will learn about the principle components and mobile crane terminology, engineering principles of stability and capacities, lifting gear – slinging and signalling procedures as well as pre-shift checks, safe load indicators, use of outriggers, rough terrain, jib lengths, reeving and altering line pull, travelling on public highways and more. This course runs for three or five days depending on previous operating experience and a TAL Certificate of Training is provided as a record of achievement.
