Lewes-based Core Process Psychotherapy, established by Julia Rivas BA (Hons) MA, is a mindfulness-focused practice that draws on both Western and Buddhist models – from the experiential work of conventional psychotherapeutic models to the wisdom and compassion of Buddhist psychology.
Mindfulness emphasises the capacity to be “present in each moment” – in order to access, process, and deal with difficult or painful feelings and experiences. Difficult or painful feelings can keep us stuck within a limited range of responses and these responses may hen constrict key relationships or parts of our lives.
A mindfulness-based approach allows us to deal with difficult feelings without judgement or self-criticism; this allows for greater adaptability and responsiveness when dealing with life’s challenges. The practice focuses on bringing out attention to the thoughts, feelings, and sensations of the moment. Mindfulness ultimately leads us to greater compassion for ourselves and other people in our lives.
Finding the right psychotherapist is critical when considering therapy. I offer a free 45-minute session so that you can get to know me, what I offer, and whether it is right for you.
Psychotherapy is, at root, very simple. Therapy offers you the opportunity to look at the nature of your distress in life, whatever its source, to look at it and have it seen by a therapist without judgement, and to build an easier relationship with the causes and pains of that distress. You may seek therapy for a range of reasons: a broken relationship, an ongoing difficulty in life, shocking personal news, ill-health, or even getting to grips with positive but challenging new life opportunities. Therapy can also help deal with many states of mind: loss, sadness, fear, disappointment or abandonment, grief, anxiety, jealousy, anger, low self-esteem, and many other feelings. Please contact me for details.

Illness or disability in a loved one, especially one’s own child, is a frightening and confusing experience. Dealing with a child’s medical difficulties can have many challenging knock-on effects – whether this is making sure that other children are also looked after, or dealing with the grief and emotional pressure of the illness, or other issues. Sharing these with family or friends can be difficult. Therapy offers you the change to talk to someone about your feelings, to relieve the distressing thoughts and anxieties, and to regain a sense of control. Please contact me for details.
I offer weekly sessions of an hour, strictly bound by professional standards of ethics and confidentiality, and governed by the Code of Ethics of my training body, the Karuna Institute.
