Rotary Telemetry

We specialise in rotary telemetry – taking non-contact measurements from rotating shafts. We attach a miniature transmitter to the component under test which converts the transducer signals into a form that enables non-contact transmission (usually inductive or RF). The signal is received by a stationary pickup and re-transmits the signal via cable to the system demodulator/ decoder for conversion to analogue or digital data. The pickup can incorporate an inductive power supply which provides electrical power to the transmitter. In non-demanding applications a small power unit can be used to power the transmitter.

Tachometer Systems

We also custom design and manufacture shaft tachometer systems suitable for use in harsh environments. Our tachometer design and manufacturing systems feature:

• High reliability systems utilising reflective infra-red techniques
• Ahead/ Astern or shaft rotation direction indication and adjustable display brilliance for night running.
• Accurate readings from less than 1 RPM with options to over 100,000 RPM
• Fully encapsulated sensors with sealed steel connectors and steel slotted shaft ring assembly
• Shaft split-rings fabricated according to shaft diameter – ranging from 25mm to 1 meter.
• Royal Navy and NATO approved.

Torquemeters

Our high performance torquemeters combine the high accuracy and low noise of Astech Rotary Telemetry Transmitters with torque sensing strain gauges. When applied to existing shafts, mean torque and torsional oscillations up to 30KHz can be measured without any disturbance being caused to the components under test. Torquemeters can also be supplied as ‘drop in’ couplings and manufactured to suit specific applications. Please visit our website to view a range of examples.

Radio Telemetry

Radio telemetry is used to transmit sensor data over large distances (greater than the 100mm – 150mm range limitation of inductive coupling). We provide systems that incorporate radio links using license free frequencies of 433MHz and 896MHz and featuring a range of 10 – 100 meters. The transmitters feature signal conditioning, encoding circuitry and construction methods for excellent data quality and high reliability. Examples of our systems include: 16 Channel Strain Gauge System – Helicopter Blades, 16 Channel Thermocouple Temperature Measurement from Large Diesel Engine Piston and Torque Strain and Temperature Measurement from Wheel Hubs.

Inductive Coupling Systems

Inductive coupling systems are used to enable the transmission of electrical power and data across an air gap. At Astech, we originally designed and manufactured inductive coupling systems for use in rotary telemetry using high frequencies to provide efficient and reliable components. From these early designs, we have developed inductive coupling systems for applications requiring angular or linear displacement or simple stationary air gaps. These systems are suitable for use in hazardous fluids, underwater, in a vacuum or at high pressure at separations of up to 50mm. Systems can be configured to suit specific applications.

Inclinometers

We originally set out creating top quality inclinometers for naval applications and have developed our systems during the years to incorporate state of the art equipment.

Our latest inclinometer interface system features:

• Battery backed local interface units (stand alone or remote central controller)
• Local interface units with built-in programmes and clear LED display
• Interfaces up to 12 remote inclinometers
• RS485 comms between remote units and central controller
• USB interface between central controller and P.C. or laptop
• Supplied software with display, storage and useful interpolation features
   

Rotary Telemetry Applications

Our standard rotary telemetry systems are widely used for short term measurement projects such as ship trials and fault investigations as well as permanent torque/RPM/power measurement systems.
