Rapid Injection Tooling

Rapid Injection Tooling (RIT) enables XPDG to produce complex injection moulded parts in as little as 3-15 days. Even the most complicated, close tolerance tooling can be developed, meaning you don’t have to re-design or simplify your part/component specifications. The tooling process begins with a standard RIT mould base with pre-fabricated inserts – close tolerance core/cavity details are achieved using rapid CNC and EDM techniques. The entire tooling process is extremely quick, meaning prototyping or production can take place much sooner. Our engineers work closely with you throughout the process – it’s our way of ensuring all your product requirements are satisfied.

Rapid Injection Tooling - Key Advantages

Rapid Injection Tooling is ideal for pilot, bridge, pre-production and clinical builds. There are no limitations when it comes to part complexity – tooling can be produced to the most acute tolerances, so there’s no need to redesign or simplify your parts. Rapid Injection Tooling is also much quicker than other methods: within 3-15 days, we can have prototypes and production parts delivered to your door. Tooling can be produced for part sizes up to 170mm x 280m x 70mm. Each tool is capable of producing up to 100,000 shots. To find out more about the advantages of Rapid Injection Tooling, please visit XPDG online or get in touch with our experts on 01865 481506.

Production Tooling and Moulding

With such tooling capacity (outlined above), XPDG can handle virtually all production requirements. We have over 150 injection presses ranging from 50t to 3000t, allowing us to produce parts and components of all shapes and sizes. From prototype to production, XPDG is here to provide a full service solution. We can even offer support with logistics and supply chain management, ensuring seamless integration with your final assembly operations.

Sheet Metal Rapid Prototyping

State-of-the-art sheet metal fabrication facilities enable us support projects from prototype to production. Whether it’s a simple sheet metal base plate or a complex, multi-part electro-mechanical assembly, our engineers can handle it. We have a range of metal forming, laser cutting/punching, CNC machining, welding and finishing equipment that enables us to produce high quality sheet metal fabrications for almost any application, using a range of materials with various physical and electrical properties. Sheet metal parts and components can be plated, powder coated and painted to achieve the finish you desire. Prototypes can be produced in a matter of days. Call us on 01865 481506 to discuss your requirements with an XPDG expert.

Die Casting

Die-casting is a process commonly employed when close tolerances are required on production quantities of lightweight, complex parts. At XPDG, we’re able to offer a rapid turnaround on even the most difficult designs, producing strong, durable, dimensionally stable parts which are inspected for quality under an ISO-accredited quality control system. Vertically integrated manufacturing capabilities mean we can produce die-cast tooling far quicker than our competitors – tooling that ensures repeatability and quality shot after shot.

XPDG has produced all manner of parts and components using die-casting techniques, from pumps and compressors to measuring instruments, plumbing fixtures, automotive powertrain components and many, many more.

Benefits of Die Casting

Die-casting holds a number of key advantages over other production techniques. Most importantly, it enables parts to be produced with extremely close tolerances, thus allowing some of the most complex designs to be reproduced. It’s also a very fast process; tooling can be produced quickly, and, once the component is cast, only a minimal amount of post-production machining, welding and fastening of separate parts is required (sometimes none at all). Castings can be made from a number of alloys to satisfy various physical property requirements: multiple finishing options are also available. Find out more about the advantages of die-casting by visiting XPDG online.

Rapid Part Machining (CNC)

Where prototypes with critical surface finishes and a high degree of dimensional accuracy are required, XPDG uses rapid CNC machining processes. These are also often employed for the production of parts that are too large for additive prototyping processes, or when high-quality metal and plastic parts are required for the evaluation of functionality prior to tooling for injection moulding. State-of-the-art CAD/CAM facilities enable us to create CNC-machined parts using a range of materials.

Rapid Part Machining - Key Advantages

CNC machining holds a number of key advantages over other prototyping techniques. Most importantly, it enables an extremely quick turnaround on parts with tight tolerances and critical surface finishes. It also enables prototyping of large parts which cannot be produced using additive processes, and gives customers a greater choice in the selection of materials. To find out more about the benefits of CNC machining, please visit XPDG online or contact us on 01865 481506.

Prototyping

When it comes to quality, capacity, precision and speed, few companies in the world can rival XPDG. Cutting edge prototyping technologies enable us to produce high quality, production-ready models extremely quickly and cost-effectively, thereby accelerating the product development cycle and reducing time-to-market. We use the very best materials and the most advanced production techniques to create precision-engineered, full-scale 3D prototypes of virtually any shape or size, with any finish, strength and material properties your application demands. Techniques employed in the production of prototypes include:

  • Stereolithography
  • Polyjet
  • Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
  • Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM)
  • Rapid Urethane Casting
  • Rapid Part Machining (RPM)
  • Rapid Injection Tooling (RIT)

Rapid Urethane Casting (RTV)

XPDG uses Rapid Urethane Casting techniques to develop short-run quantities of production-like parts that can feature moulded-in colour and texture. Whether you require small parts for medical devices or large components for military hardware, we can provide a prototype with the aesthetics and material properties required for almost any application. Rapid Urethane Casting has virtually no size limitations and is capable of producing prototypes that accurately mimic the colour, texture, feel and physical properties of injection moulded parts. Find out more by visiting XPDG online, or by getting in touch with our friendly, helpful customer representatives on 01865 481506.

Polyjet/Objet

Polyjet prototyping is a process employed in the development of small but highly detailed models and those with complex interior features, such as medical devices, electronic packaging, components and connectors, valves and fittings. Horizontal layer resolutions down to 16 microns enable 3D printing of prototypes with walls as thin as 0.6mm, and surfaces entirely free of stair-stepping. A range of material options are available – XPDG experts can help in selection of the most appropriate for your application. Meanwhile, our finishing craftsmen can handle all aspects of  hardware installation, painting, texturing or other surface treatment (should your prototypes require them). Please get in touch to find out more.

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is a rapid prototyping technique used to produce tough, durable, functional models, including those which are resistant to heat and chemicals. It is typically employed for the production of parts or components with snap fits, living hinges and other mechanical joints. SLS enables several pieces to be produced at one time, making it a good choice for Direct Digital Manufacturing (DDM) of products that require a high level of strength and heat resistance. A variety of materials can be used in SLS prototyping, including nylon, glass-filled nylon, metals and wax. Finishing options include painting, coating, bead blasting and annealing.

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)

Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) capabilities enable XPDG to produce dimensionally accurate, functional prototypes and small-quantity production parts which are highly resistant to chemical degradation, mechanical stress and extreme temperatures. FDM techniques of are often employed in the production of complex parts for use in aerospace, automotive and medical applications. A number of engineering-grade thermoplastics can be used in Fused Deposition Modelling, including various ABS and polycarbonate materials.

Paint, Graphics and Complete Finishing

At XPDG, our finishing specialists have all three, so you can expect nothing less than the best. We take great pride in producing high quality, superbly finished prototypes and production parts, and we use a variety of techniques to achieve a finish that’s most appropriate for the intended application, including:

  • Sanding
  • Bead blasting
  • Texturing
  • Powder coating
  • Painting
  • Metalising
  • Plating
  • Etching
  • Shielding
  • Ultrasonic welding
  • Polishing
