Silicone Coatings

Silicone coatings are used across a variety of industries and in many different applications, from bag closures to medical instruments, car door panel inserts to roofing underlay. At SJA, we offer a range of silicone coated films, including:

• HDPE – in any colour
• LDPE -  in any colour
• PET – in natural, matte or metallised colour ranges.
• CPP – in white.
• Blown PP – in white
• BOPP – clear
• MOPP – natural, white

Coating specifications are as follows:

• Offset Gravure UV coating
• In-line corona treatment
• Various release levels - customer requirements
• Up to 1600mm wide (can coat 1590mm)
• 150-300m/min
• Thickness range 12 - 400 micron (dependant in substrate)

Silicone Release Films

In 2009, SJA Film Technologies began producing UV cured, solvent-free silicone release films. They proved to be extremely successful, and are now in use across many different markets. 

Siliconised liner products can be matched to existing requirements or made according to customer specifications using various release formulations and/or base films. Thicknesses can vary from 12 microns to 200+ microns.

Traverse Wound Bobbins

SJA Film Technologies leads the way in spooling technology. At our facility in Accrington we have two state-of-the-art 12 and 24-head traverse wound bobbin machines, both of which are capable of converting extensible / non-extensible, adhesive / non-adhesive substrates from 2mm through to 40mm in width. 

By moving from pads to bobbins, changeover downtime is virtually eliminated. Efficiencies can increase by up to 1000%, and wastage reduced to as little as 1%. In most cases, a bobbin can contain 40 times the linear metres of a pad.

Slitting & Rewinding

At SJA we’re able to slit and rewind a variety of substrates. Films supplied from stock can be split to almost any customer specification. 

To date, we have converted extensible and non-extensible substrates from 6 micron through to 250 micron. 

Maximum substrate diameter for unwinds is 1000mm, and for rewinds 780mm. Slit widths can vary from 6mm through to 1620mm, depending on the type of substrate. 

We have capacity for over 120 tonnes per week.

Film & Substrate Supply

When SJA was first set up back in June 2003, we supplied only one substrate: Cast Polypropylene film. Today, we’re able to offer a huge range of films for use across a variety of industries, and we are continually looking to expand this range with new, innovative products to satisfy the requirements of an ever-growing customer base. As well as Cast Polypropylene we now offer:

Substrates can be supplied as conventional pads/pancakes or on bobbins/spools. 

Cable Wrap Substrates

SJA supplies a variety of cable wrap films for use in the production of telecommunications cabling, broadband cables, cable shielding, under-sea umbilicals, data cables and other related products. These can be supplied in pads or spools, depending on your requirements. However, cable wrap substrates are best supplied in spools, since changeover times are reduced and efficiencies greatly improved. Spool meterages can be as much as 40 times the linear metres contained on a pad.

Lidding Films

We also now supply a variety of lidding films for sandwich wedges, salads, snacks and ready meal trays. Standard films are 19 microns thick (24 microns including coating), though other thicknesses are available if required. Lidding films are designed to meet various criteria – they can be frozen and heated to very high/low temperatures, and are also sealable at temperatures less than 100°C (depending on the equipment used).

Lidding films are supplied in widths of 75mm, 85mm, 95mm, 97mm and 112mm, and in roll lengths of 457m, 500m, 914m and 1000m. Other widths and roll lengths can be supplied at short notice.

Substrate Folding

We’re able to fold a variety of substrates from 100mm to 2000mm in width. Whether you need new film folded to your specifications or would like us to fold your existing film as required, SJA Film Technologies can offer a cost-effective solution.

Hot Needle Perforation

We are one of the few film technology companies in the UK with the facilities to carry out hot needle perforation (in P1, P8 and P160 patterns) on substrates up to 1000mm in width. Hot needle perforation is a process used to create small, reinforced holes within a substrate. The melted film creates a small ring around the hole that prevents it from tearing or splitting.

Salvage Rewinding

Don’t let good materials go to waste. We’re able to salvage all sorts of damaged papers and films and turn them into saleable, useable stock. 

Crushed or squashed cores, oversized rolls, undersized or oversized reels, incorrectly sized cores, scuffed edges, uneven profiles, damaged film – all of these can be salvaged, so make sure you speak to SJA before throwing them away.

Label Stock & Bespoke

At SJA we have facilities for slitting, re-winding and re-labelling, providing an economical solution for  all your redundant label stocks. De-Spoolers

With many customers choosing to replace traditional pads with spools, SJA decided to develop its very own single and double-headed de-spooling units. Not only do these allow the film to unwind in a straight line, they also enable unwind tension to be controlled for greater precision in the production process. 

With our de-spooling units customers can achieve huge savings. Downtime (changeover) is greatly reduced, and scrap is all but eliminated. In fact, by replacing conventional pads with spools and a special de-spooling unit developed by SJA you could save approximately 1.67 working weeks and up to 100,000m of material in just a single year!
