Water Recovery for Process from Municipal Effluent

Kirton Engineering Limited was approached to provide a water treatment solution in the Atacama region of Chile. Existing pipelines already supplied up to 400 m³/hr of treated municipal effluent to the area for general grey water use. However, our proposal was to develop the system with the use of membrane technologies in order to supply water that would meet the required standards for metal processing carried out by a mining company in the region at the time. Our proposal was accepted for the design, installation and commission of a system that provided 72m³/hr of high quality water.

Containerised Reverse Osmosis Desalination System

We also designed, manufactured and installed a containerised reverse osmosis desalination system in Gibralter which we continue to operate and maintain. This system provides various residential, hotel and apartment complexes with high quality water. In fact, the system supplies approximately 33% of the country’s water consumption. The system was installed in 2011 and features seawater lift pumps, backwashing 200 micron strainers, storage and dosing systems for biocide dosing, antiscalant, post mineralisation and sterilisation, water storage tanks and more. It provides 1500 m³/day and uses less than 3 kw/hr per m³ of permeate water produced.

Sea Water Reverse Osmosis System

This system was installed as part of a major refurbishment scheme and features 2 x 200m³/day reverse osmosis trains and a common multi-media and cartridge filtration pre-treatment system. It also features pressure exchanger technology to keep energy costs per cubic metre to a minimum as well as full SCADA control with remote access. Operators are alerted to areas of attention on the system via telemetry and email alert functions.
