  • Recycling collections
  • Waste removal
  • Waste disposal

Grundon owns and operates a large and varied fleet of purpose-built collection vehicles, as well as a range of state-of-the-art treatment facilities, including transfer stations, hydroclaves, clinical/hazardous waste incinerators and landfill sites. Our diverse waste collection and treatment plant enables us to handle a huge range of materials.

At Grundon, our aim is to deliver the very highest standards of service quality and customer care.

What we do...

Grundon is involved in virtually all aspects of waste removal and waste disposal, and can offer services to cover almost all requirements. Core business activities include:

  • Recycling and recovery
  • Contract and estate management
  • Leisure and amenity services
  • Technological solutions
  • Aggregate extraction, processing and supply
  • Incineration
  • Special events services

At Grundon, we keep a shrewd eye on key environmental issues and market trends. Our commitment to ongoing research and development has earned us the admiration of our competitors and the respect and appreciation of conservationists and customers alike.

Recycling and recovery

Our extensive recycling facilities enable us to re-form all kinds of materials, many of which are in high demand. We’ll help you get the most from your waste by extracting all of the materials that can be reused and sold on. This in turn reduces your landfill requirements, which in some cases can be very costly. Of course, recycling isn’t just good for the books – it’s also good for the environment. Recycling just one tonne of paper can save almost 13 trees, 2.5 barrels of oil, 4100kWh of electricity, 4 cubic metres of landfill and 31,780 litres of water. Other materials typically recycled include plastics, metals, textiles, glass and green waste such as vegetable peelings. Find out more about our recycling services by visiting Grundon Waste Management online.

Contract and estate management

Today’s company directors can face hefty fines or even imprisonment if their enterprises fail to dispose of waste in the correct and legal manner. This of course has created an extra burden of responsibility that distracts companies from their core business activities. You need to be able to comply, but at the same time you can’t afford to continue to divert resources from critical operations. That’s where a waste management contract with Grundon comes in handy. We take away the burden of legal compliance and environmental responsibility and let you get back to business. As experts in these fields, you can rely on us to ensure your company complies with all UK and EU legislation. Visit us online to find out what’s included.

Composting

Grundon’s green waste treatment facilities at Beenham allow us to process up to 25,000 tonnes of green waste every year. All waste is checked for contamination and then shredded and mixed before being transferred to local farmers and landowners who plough it into the ground. It’s one of the most cost-effective methods of treating green waste and is approved and regulated by The Environment Agency. Find out more about this service by visiting Grundon Waste Management online or contacting your local depot.

Transfer stations

Our hazardous waste transfer station in Oxfordshire is licensed to accept almost all types of hazardous waste. It is operated by a team of highly trained, degree qualified chemists who inspect and assess every waste stream that enters the site. These chemists are further supported by a team of skilled plant operators, as well as the Grundon Technical Department.  Hazardous waste can be collected from most UK addresses. For all enquiries relating to hazardous waste disposal, please contact the Grundon Technical Department at Ewelme depot on 01491 839212.

Hydroclaves

Grundon’s hydroclave facilities enable us to treat most types of clinical waste generated from hospitals, nursing homes, dentists, doctors and other healthcare related producers. This process, which uses steam to sterilise clinical waste, is far more cost-efficient than high temperature incineration, yet still fully compliant with the stringent UK and EC Regulatory framework. Of course, our hydroclave facilities have not entirely replaced our high temperature incinerators – indeed, we still use the latter for processing a range of materials. You can find out more about our hydroclave and incineration facilities by visiting Grundon Waste Management online.

Clinical waste removal

Clinical waste refers to any material or matter that is made up completely or partially of human or animal tissue, including blood, body fluids and excretion. It can also include drugs and other pharmaceutical products, used swabs or dressings, syringes, needles and other sharp instruments used in a clinical environment. All of these items can pose a risk to the health of other humans or animals, and therefore must be removed and treated in the correct manner by highly trained staff. Grundon Waste Management are licensed to handle such materials and can offer various solutions for clinical waste treatment. Get in touch to find out more.

Energy from waste...

Waste that cannot be re-used or recycled can in many cases be used as fuel. This not only diverts large volumes of waste from landfill, but also generates substantial amounts of power, helping to reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels. At our Lakeside Energy from Waste (EfW) facility in Colnbrook, we’re able to recover energy from over 410,000 tonnes of residual waste per year. This equates to around 37 MW of electricity. A small amount of this is used to power the plant itself, but the rest is exported to the National Grid - it’s enough to meet the domestic needs of around 50,000 homes.

Incineration

Central to our integrated clinical and hazardous waste management operation is our state-of-the-art high temperature incinerator, located at our Colnbrook facility near Heathrow Airport. An ongoing programme of upgrade and refurbishment ensures that our incineration plant continues to operate to standards that far exceed those required by UK and European regulations. We’re capable of processing up to one tonne an hour and are authorised by The Environment Agency to accept all clinical waste, pharmaceutical/cytotoxic waste, radioactive waste, hazardous waste and a range of packaging items (sacks, burn bins, wheeled bins etc.).

Hazardous Waste Services

We have a considerable amount of experience in the classification, handling, management and disposal of hazardous waste, and are able and approved to receive a huge range of materials. Grundon always remains up to date with the latest UK and European legislation, responding to it with some of the most efficient and advanced technical solutions in the country. Hazardous waste services/solutions offered include:

  • Bulk collections
  • Chem-Pack collections
  • Haz-Box service
  • Packaged hazardous waste collection
  • Specialist collections
  • Specialised containers (Chemsafe and Grunsafe)
  • Tanker services
  • Emergency response service

Landfill

With landfill sites throughout the Midlands and the south of England, Grundon has capacity for more than 13 million tonnes of waste. But we at Grundon take our environmental responsibilities very seriously, ensuring careful planning and the highest standards of professional operation. At all of our sites we have electronic weighbridges that enable us to monitor loads, as well as computer systems that allow us to document all waste movements. Find out more about how we protect the environment and surrounding communities by visiting Grundon Waste Management online.

Environmental care...

Grundon is committed to minimising the impact that our operations have on the environment. We are actively evaluating and researching new techniques for landfill lining, soil restoration, hazardous waste collection and recycling. Since 2000 we have also been producing Corporate Environmental Reports that measure the company’s performance against a core set of environmental indicators. You can find the latest of these on the Grundon website.

Aggregate expertise...

We have been extracting and producing minerals for the construction, leisure and landscaping markets since the company’s inception back in 1929. We now operate eight quarries across Southern England where we produce a broad range of materials for an even broader range of applications and industries. Central to this operation is the supply of sand and aggregates to the building, construction, landscaping, decorative and leisure markets.
