Andrew Moor Architects has a long reputation – nearly 30 years – of working in architectural glass. The firm has collaborated with a number of renowned artists and architects on glass projects across the United Kingdom and around the world.

Our work uses a wide range of techniques in architectural glass to create a number of aesthetic and functional effects. We are experienced with stained glass, enamelled or fritted glass, glass with digital prints, etched glass, and slumped glass.

Andrew Moor Architects also offers a specialist and expert glass consulting service. We offer detailed technical advice on the best way to use glass in art and architectural applications. Our work also extends to designing and manufacturing glass for the built environment. We create and execute commissions for glass works that are essential to the fabric and character of a building or a public space.

We have extensive experience of managing projects, in collaboration with artists who work in the glass medium, to realise their designs and vision in glass. We have a unique body of experience and work, and thus unique qualifications, in designing, manufacturing, and installing glass art. We personally manage a glass installation from the first ideas and enquiries to the final installation of a piece.

Commercial Art

Commercial contexts for glass installations typically involve an office reception or a building exterior. The glass artwork is intended to create a surface or space that is inviting and pleasing, and more interesting, than without a glass piece. Glass installations can help property developers find tenants who wish to work in the space and to offer a reception embellished with glass as their first point of contact for clients and partners in business. Glass artwork is also often used in office interiors, such as in canteens, conference rooms, and break-out areas, to create an environment that is attractive, and at once stimulating and relaxing.

Public Buildings

All manner of public buildings may wish to include glass artwork to improve their profiles and public situation. Libraries, schools, hospitals, council offices, and many other buildings, can benefit from glass embellishing and art. Public buildings have special roles in the community – glass can be used to give buildings an individual character and appeal that sets them apart from the impersonality of the wider built environment. Art, including in glass, has been proven to create a warm atmosphere for people who work in a public building and people who visit. Glass art can be used to brand a building exterior and to add identifying attractive features for the interior.

Technology

Andrew Moor Architects uses at least a dozen technologies and techniques to produce glass artwork. Stained glass is an old technique that has been refined for centuries – and one that is in constant demand for new works and restoring ancient pieces. Laminated antique glass is a mouth-blown glass technique that offers rich colour, texture, and beauty, unmatched by other contemporary methods. Transparent enamelled are screen-printed, or airbrushed or painted, designs on to pieces of glass. Opaque enamels and digital opaque enamels (also called fritted glass) are more predictable variations on the transparent enamel method. We also apply designs to glass with painting in resin and digital printing. We also produce slumped glass – glass heated over a mould to create a new shape. Fused glass and etched glass are further examples of the techniques we have mastered in our studio.

Residential Art

Andrew Moor Architects are often contracted to create a striking and attractive "wow" factor in a client's home. Glass artwork can offer a unique, fascinating conversation piece for a residence. And glass art can also be used to obscure an unwelcome or unattractive feature or view. Artwork of any kind, including glass, can replace deficiencies with unique features that are delicate, unobtrusive, and appealing. Glass artwork can offer these aesthetic values while also fulfilling a critical function – such as blocking people from viewing in to a stairwell. We are able to work flexibility within any brief, and any local situation, to determine how glass artwork can meet your domestic needs.
