A third generation family business, Protocon Engineering began trading in 1964, becoming a limited company in 1969. We produce a wide range of precision components, initially primarily for the electronics industry. Over the years we expanded significantly, increasing our remit to include manufacturing a variety of parts for the medical industry as well as for the civil and aerospace industry. Additionally, we supply components to the communications sector. We operate out of our facility in Southend, which has grown to 5000 square feet. As well as providing high quality precision component manufacture, we offer design input to development and first article inspection reports. All our components are fully traceable. Our aim has always been to give our customers the best possible service in terms of quality, cost and delivery. The industries we provide to work to very precise and demanding specifications, so we make sure our products meet and surpass these exacting requirements.
Our inspection facilities are fully equipped with a comprehensive range of inspection machines. We have a Mitutoyo Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), with everything needed for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) operation. We have an additional CMM, also with full CNC capabilities. We utilise a Gibbs-Cam CAM (Computer Aided Manufacture) system for 2D drawing files, as well as solid models. This superior system offers production advantages including reduced down time, state of the art graphical representation, optimum cutter feed and speed data and speedy programme development, both on and off line. We are proud to have achieved approval to AS9100 Revision C, demonstrating our commitment to quality. We also hold ISO BS EN 9100:2009, ISO9001:2008 accreditation . To help us attain and maintain the high quality of components that our clients demand, our plant facilities include several efficient and reliable machining centres from top name manufacturers. We have five Fanuc Robodrill Alphas, as well as a 24 tool station from HAAS plus rotary indexers and a vertical machining centre, both by HAAS. Full details can be seen on our website.
We employ a range of top brand lathes for cutting, drilling, turning, etc. These machines have varying capacities to ensure that we have the right tool to produce various different components to out customers’ exacting standards. EDM (Electric Discharge Machining) is also known as spark machining, spark eroding, burning, die sinking or wire erosion. We use a Fanuc EDM Wire Cut Machine Alpha OC 4 axis unit, enabling us to create desired shapes by using electrical discharges. The Fanuc Alpha has automatic wire feed and lights out machining capability, as CNC machine tools do not need constant attention from an operator and some can be run unattended.
Our plant facilities also include a good range of general equipment – from two, four and six tonne presses, to a 35 tonne press with air cushioning and air feed and a three tonne pneumatic press. We employ several different top of the line machines for grinding and honing, as well as a variety of conventional lathes/milling machines.
