Mike Ayres Design Ltd specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of sensory environments for people with special needs. The chief designer Mike Ayres has been developing interactive sensory apparatus for schools, hospitals, hospices and museums since the mid 1980s - longer than any other UK company. We develop innovative concepts and bring them to fruition in the form of high quality products and environments for care and education. We never make any compromises in design or manufacture, and this ensures that we remain at the forefront of inspirational and technical development. Our extensive production workshops encompass a variety of design and manufacturing technologies that allow us to develop sensory equipment that sets a high standard for the sector to follow. We always listen to your requirements, and never press anyone into buying products. It's this approach that has made Mike Ayres Design Ltd the supplier of choice for many special needs establishments. As well as a full range of in-house designed apparatus, Mike Ayres Design Ltd supplies a carefully selected range of products from other leading manufacturers. Take a look at some of our inspiring products and environments on the Mike Ayres Design Ltd website. Sensory Studios

The Sensory Studio is a concept evolved from the revolutionary Snoezelen multi-sensory room and interactive light and dark rooms. Developed specifically to meet the need for a sensory environment that is adaptable to space requirements, they are now commonly used in mainstream schools as well as schools for pupils with special needs. Sensory Studios provide appropriate physical and cognitive interactivity for children and adults with special needs. They are commonly used for curriculum work at all levels, drama and creative arts, communication and pastoral work, and for specific therapy and assessment.

Bubble Tubes

Drawing upon advanced technologies, responsive bubble tubes are a simple interactive tool for therapeutic, leisure and educational activities. A control allows you to alter the colour and frequency of the bubbles for co-operative and competitive games with a group or a single person. Bubble tubes are a valuable tool for learning specific skills such as independent choice making, while also providing a sensory experience. They feature 14 programmes or modes that allow you to control extremely bright and true colour LED lamps. Each unit comes with a standard easy access base stand. Fixed and portable versions are available.

Sensory Trolley

The Sensory Trolley by Mike Ayres is a versatile and mobile sensory resource that provides a convenient option for establishments that are short for space. Sensory Trolleys come complete with Switch2 control, sound systems, and any other equipment that you might require. The equipment can be used on the trolley or anywhere in the room.

Tactile Panels / Murals

Tactile sensation forms a fundamental part of our overall sensory experience. It enhances our understanding of the environment in which we live, and allows us to make opinions and decisions about the properties of materials around us. For example, heat may be a safe or dangerous sensation, but we are only able to understand what is pleasant and what will hurt by exploring and learning about the properties of materials within safe parameters. Mike Ayres Tactile Panels provide that safe parameter. They can be designed with materials that are rough and smooth, warm and cold, angular and curved, soft and hard, embossed and impressed, fine and coarse, rigid and flexible, absorbent and reflective. You can also determine the overall shape, colour and size that’s suitable for your establishment. Follow the link to find out more!

Fibre-Optic Lights

Fibre-Optic lights are used for a range of visual simulation experiences.

Multi-Sensory Rooms

Multi-sensory rooms provide an environment where people with any degree of disability can focus on the primary senses of sight, sound, smell, touch and taste, as well as more abstract senses such as wellbeing, time, space, and togetherness. They do this using special sound and visual effects, tactile experiences, aromas, music and vibration, in various combinations and variations. The result is a room in which the participant can learn, explore, interact and relax. People of all ages and abilities use multi-sensory rooms for relaxation, stimulation, massage, aromatherapy, control, physiotherapy, reminiscence work, communication and stress release.

Ball Pool Showers

Our patented Ball Pool Showers create an exciting play feature in all kinds of play areas. The children throw the balls into a tray at the side of the pool where they can watch them being sucked up into the shower tank. They are held here until the tank is full before being released where they shower down on those below. Children love our Ball Pool Showers and will be amused for hours sending the balls up the tubes and waiting in anticipation for the balls to shower down.

Bean Cushions

We also now have a great range of high quality bean cushions. These are manufactured from a soft textured, durable polyurethane coated fabric which is comfortable, breathable and waterproof. The fabric is also anti-microbial, anti-fungal, phlhalate free and fire retardant. The outer cover can be taken off and cleaned easily as the inner bag contains the beads so they don’t spill. Our bean cushions are available in various shapes and sizes and in a range of great colours. They are extremely comfy and can be moulded to suit all types of posture or are just great for children to climb on and over.
