Business contract hire allows businesses to lease a vehicle for a term usually between 12 and 48 months, with a fixed payment method. The payments attract VAT of which 50% or 100% of the finance element is reclaimable for cars and commercial vehicles respectively, and 100% of the VAT for any maintenance payment is also reclaimable. The rental payments can be offset against corporation tax due to being classed as a true business expense. The benefit of this kind of lease is its fixed monthly payments with no disposal risk, but care must be taken of the car and the finance company will levy a charge if the stated mileage is exceeded.
With personal contract hire, the finance company purchase the vehicle, then estimate the value at the end of the term, with your monthly payment being made up of the depreciation and interest. Benefits include fixed payments and no residual value risk, but as with business contract hire, reasonable care must be kept of the vehicle, and the finance company will levy a charge if the mileage stated at contract inception is exceeded.
Finance lease provides a business with a vehicle that can be used for the length of the lease or beyond, with subsequent secondary or peppercorn rentals. Payments attract VAT and rentals can be offset against corporation tax. With finance lease, the lessee is responsible for disposal, 99% of which can usually be retained.
