About Asbestos

Asbestos was widely used in building and construction between the late 1940s until the mid 1970s. Asbestos is now known to cause fatal lung disease when its fibres are released and inhaled. It is therefore essential that asbestos is maintained and managed in commercial and residential properties and is done so in line with The Duty to Manage (Regulation 4. CAR). The ‘Duty to Manage’ regulation means it is not essential to carry out an asbestos survey, however we advise clients on all suitable options. Asbestos, in good condition, can be safely managed in situ without the need for removal or remediation.

Services

Here at ENV we offer a range of services to help clients manage asbestos in accordance with current and new regulations. We provide general information on asbestos materials and management as well as free advice on remediation options.

We offer UKAS accredited asbestos surveys that conform to the HSE guidelines as well as UKAS accredited sample analysis. We can also produce a comprehensive report highlighting in great detail the location, condition, risk assessment and recommendations for asbestos remediation.

We have many years’ experience in the industry and can offer independent advice on suitable contractors to carry out asbestos removal or asbestos remediation work.

Management Surveys

Our management surveys are designed to determine and locate, as far as possible, the presence and extent of asbestos in buildings which could be damaged or disturbed during occupancy. Sampling and analysis is usually undertaken via our in-house laboratory and a comprehensive report will be completed highlighting in great detail the location, condition, material assessment and recommendations for necessary remediation work.

Refurbishment and Demolition Surveys

Our refurbishment and demolition surveys are carried out before any refurbishment or demolition work takes place. They are essential for determining the location of all asbestos containing materials in order for the project to be carried out safely. This type of survey is fully intrusive and involves destructive inspection to gain access to all areas of the building. We carry out full sampling to identify asbestos containing materials. Any asbestos containing materials identified can then be removed with the necessary care. A comprehensive report is supplied highlighting the location, condition, material assessment and recommendations for remediation of asbestos materials.

Asbestos Sampling, Testing & Bulk Analysis

ENV is accredited by UKAS to ISO/ IEC 17025:2005 to carry out asbestos analysis in accordance with HSG248 which is the analysis guide. We follow methods described in HSG248 alongside our own internal quality control procedures to ensure our services are of the highest standard. We also participate in the AIMS external audit scheme.

ENV is pleased to boast a fantastic team of highly skilled individuals who are all qualified to BOHS P401 or S301.

Alongside our analysis services we can also organise Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) via suitable UKAS accredited laboratories if it is needed.

Asbestos Awareness Training

Employers today have a duty of care to their staff to ensure that if they have the potential of coming in to contact with asbestos they have received the correct safety information. As fully accredited and highly experienced specialists we have developed a half-day training course designed to equip delegates with the information they need to work safely with and around asbestos.  Involving both classroom learning and practical exercise methods, the course can be tailored to your organisation’s specific needs and provides an important step towards business compliance with legal obligations. Asbestos Management Plans

Asbestos Management Plans are often confused with Asbestos Survey Reports, however the two are distinctly different.  Asbestos Management Plans are drawn up after survey reports have been finalised and include information such as priority assessments, a table of priority for action, timetables for action, employee responsibilities, training requirements and arrangements, arrangements in place for monitoring and re-inspection, methods for sharing the information regarding asbestos and ongoing procedures for review of the management plan. ENV are equipped to either draw up management plans for you or, alternatively, are able to provide advice and guidance to ensure your plans fully comply with current regulations.

Asbestos Removal Project Management

Often in the instance of complex, large-scale asbestos removal projects, clients feel more comfortable enlisting the services of a specialist to project manage the asbestos removal tasks and ensure they have been undertaken in accordance with legal requirements.  We look at each project individually but our project management service is likely to include; preparation of contractor specifications, on-site contractor liaison, tender evaluation, arrangement of air monitoring and evaluating the level of monitoring required, undertaking contractor audits, removal of works completion file preparation.  Please contact us to discuss your requirements and to see how ENV Surveys can relieve some of the stress associated with asbestos removal.

UKAS Accreditation

ENV is accredited to BS EN ISO/IEC 17020 as a Type C Inspection Body in order to carry out Management, Refurbishment and Demolition Surveys.
