BRITISH INTERNATIONAL FREIGHT ASSOCIATION
BIFA is the trade association for companies engaged in the international movement of freight to and from the United Kingdom by all modes of transport, road, rail, sea and air.
THE ASSOCIATION
BIFA Members comprises some 1,200 companies together with over 5,000 individuals in the Institute of Freight Professionals. Trading Members are located throughout the UK, and the industry provides employment for over 70,000 individuals. A recent survey showed that BIFA Members operate over 25,000 vehicles in the UK. Members also provide international rail freight services via the Channel Tunnel, and a number operate all-cargo aircraft on international routes.
Corporate membership is not automatic, and applicant companies undergo a vetting process and subsequently are required to adhere to a number of criteria, including:-
Adoption of the 2000 Standard Trading Conditions
Adequate Liability insurance cover
BIFA Code of Conduct
Continuous professional development of staff
The Association operates through a structure of Management Committees each representing a sector of the trading membership. Additionally there are a number of Working Groups.
POLICIES
The role of the Association includes support for the principles of free trade world-wide; the development and maintenance of a healthy international freight services industry within the European Union by all modes of transport.
LOBBYING AND REPRESENTATIO
NBIFA seeks to influence the decision making process of the national government and the European Commission in Brussels. As appropriate BIFA operates independently or in conjunction with other associations and representative bodies.
TRAINING & EDUCATION
BIFA is committed to raising the standard of professionalism and level of skills within the industry.
It offers a wide range of training courses for members and non-members alike.
