What Is PAT Testing?

A legal requirement in the UK since 'The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989', PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) is a regular safety check of all portable electrical equipment to ensure that they are safe and fit for use by customers and staff. Mainly all items fitted with a BS1363 plug should be tested and this includes items regardless of whether or not they are plugged in. Electrical goods that require PAT testing include kettles, toasters, televisions, vacuum cleaners as well as large items such as computers and photocopiers. Testing is quick and each item only takes a few minutes, we then provide a written report on our findings. We can also monitor your testing and re-test when applicable.

Why Do I Need PAT Testing?

It is important to carry out testing not only to comply with the aforementioned ‘The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989; Section 4(2)’ but also to meet the standards of ‘The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999’ as well as ‘The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974; Section 2’. Regular PAT testing is also vital for ensuring that you, your employees and customers are safe and protected against the threat of fire or other injuries. In addition, having regular testing will also placate your insurance company as well as the Fire Officers and Health & Safety Inspectors who often require copies of the PAT certificate.

What's Included in PAT Testing?

Our qualified and experienced PAT Test engineers can carry out tests on between 100 and 200 appliances a day depending on the nature of the equipment and the premises where testing is being carried out. Our PAT test service is very comprehensive and includes all test reports, labels, re-tests and any mirror repairs that can be carried out on the day such as changing a fuse of replacing a plug. Should an item be beyond repair, our engineers carry spare leads and extension cables so that for a small fee we can replace equipment immediately. Once the test has been completed we can supply you with the downloaded results either as a spreadsheet or database file.
