Beds

Please visit our website to find out more about our Portland Stone beds. Examples of the range include:

  • Bowers Roach: features large turreted gastropods and clam shells associated with voids. The texture in between the voids is often tight and dense.
  • Bowers Whitbed: features a natural granular texture with voids associated with the shells in bands and randomly distributed across the stones.
  • Bowers Basebed: features a tight texture – some of the recent production is slightly more course than previously extracted.
  • Grove Whitbed: features large clam shells associated with voids. Texture in between the voids is often tight and dense.

Other available beds include: Jordans Roach, Jordans Whitbed, Fancy Beach Whitbed, Jordans Basebed. Please visit the website for full details and descriptions.

Geology

Portland Stone was formed approximately 145 million years ago at the ends of the Jurassic period. In the warm, shallow seas where Portland Stone was forming, a chemical reaction was taking place. Calcium and bicarbonate ions combined to form a muddy calcareous precipitate and tiny particles of sand and organic detritus such as shell fragments found lying on, or in suspension close to the sea floor, acted as nuclei which then slowly became coated with this fine-grained calcium carbonate. As time continues, and the layers of calcium carbonate accumulated around the nuclei, the spherical sediments called ooids became buried and cemented together resulting in the oolitic limestone we now know as Portland Stone.

Factory Processes

Our factory at Portland is known as one of the largest and most advanced in the UK today. From here our incredible team produces an outstanding range of Portland Stone products from slabs, cladding panels and pavers through to intricate hand-carved stones. Our team follows production processes of: Primary Sawing (the first cutting process to the block), Secondary Sawing (cuts the slabs from the primary saws into the stones for ashlar cladding, pavers or cubes ready for further processing), Masonry (involves shaping the stones) and Finishing (involves putting a rubber finish on all seen sides to remove all saw cutting and tool marks).

Quarry & Mines

At Albion Stone we are currently extracting dimension stone at two main sites: Bowers and Jordans. We have planning permission for a new mine at Stonehills which we aim to bring into production in 2014/2015. To find out more about our quarries and mines, please call Albion Stone and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
