Barenbrug is one of the UK’s largest producers of grass seed, distributing over 4,000 tonnes of seed each year through a wide network of suppliers in the amenity and forage markets.
Our grass seeds are prized throughout the UK for their quality – all production processes are carried out to Higher Voluntary Standards (HVS), guaranteeing a higher level of purity and germination. Moreover, all of our seeds are sold in full compliance with the minimum standards required by the UK Seeds Registration and/or the ECC Seeds Directives. Barenbrug can provide all the relevant certification upon request.
Barenbrug are experts in plant breeding. We know how to select and develop quality cultivars with all the essential characteristics required by our customers, whether it’s disease and drought tolerance, cool-temperature germination, rapid wear recovery or virtually any other grass trait. We’ve been developing cultivars at research stations in a variety of climatic zones for over half a century, and today we run research centres in many countries across five continents in order that we can provide well-adapted cultivars and species that can survive and prosper in all conditions.
We put a lot of time and effort into the development of our products. In fact, it takes around 15 years to develop a new cultivar! That’s why we have to make sure we get it right: It’s why we spend so much time listening to the demands of our customers – so that we can meet their future requirements.

Barenbrug produces a wide variety of grass seed mixtures for the amenities market, including those for landscaping projects, sports pitches and golf courses.

Barenbrug have developed agricultural grass and forage seed mixtures that are unique to each geographical region of the UK. We have different mixtures for Northern Ireland, Scotland, and England & Wales. The length of time the sward is intended to last will influence the choice of mixture.
- Short Term Mixtures – based on Italian ryegrasses. Suitable for short term leys.
- Medium Term Mixtures – based on predominantly hybrid ryegrasses. Suitable for medium term leys.
- Long Term/Permanent Mixtures – based on predominantly perennial ryegrasses. Suitable for leys of up to ten years.
- Forage Seed Mixtures – including forage maize, forage rape, stubble turnips and mixtures suitable for conservation schemes.

Barenbrug is a leading supplier of specialist mixtures for the turf production market. We know that each turf producer has their own unique seed requirements, which is why we offer both traditional and innovative mixtures which possess a variety of characteristics. This includes mixtures for drought tolerance, tensile strength and salt tolerance. All of the seeds used in our mixtures are certified by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and are also independently tested both before and after mixing to ensure that they are of turf quality.

When it comes to the selection of grass, golf is one of the most demanding sports there is. Barenbrug offer a wide range of grass seed blends and mixtures to meet all requirements, whether it’s a fine cut for the green or a thicker grade for the rough.
- Greens – generally require the finest quality grass which can be mowed and kept so that the ball will roll smoothly.
- Green Surrounds – generally require a similar texture and density to the turf used on the green, but should also provide a smooth transition from the fairway.
- Winter Greens – require a blend with a greater resistance to damage when frozen.
- Tees – require a finer blend that can be cut short to allow the least possible interference when teeing off.
- Fairways – generally require a fine blend.
- Semi-roughs and deep-roughs – generally require a greater density, with fast establishment properties.
