Company Description
Combe Products specialises in power protection solutions to the UK market. We provide customers with a complete service so that they can request the level of service they need. This may be from pre-sales consultancy, project management, site surveys, supply, installation, ad-hoc design, electrical installation, associated pre-installation of ground and building work, and more. We work closely with our customers and tailor our services to meet specific requirements. Our service is designed to help all types of businesses, both small and large, to prepare for the event of power failure. To ensure that power failures do not disrupt the continuity of the business, our products and services are designed to work as a safety net for when such incidents occur.

UPS Products

We supply a wide range of UPS products for different set-ups. Examples of the range include:

  • Plug Dialog 550VA: Suitable for SOHO or single computers. It features four power sockets, three with battery backup for six minutes. The fourth socket provides spike protection only for the printer.
  • Net Dialog 800VA to 2000VA: This model provides budget power protection for up to four computers and has a back-up time of five minutes. It also includes spike protection for telephone/ modem line.
  • Master Plus: For the large server room/ data centre this model is a three-phase unit complete with shutdown management software. It can also be paralleled with up to six other units for expansion and/or n+1 redundancy.

Generator Products

Our range of generators has been designed to suit most types of industry requirements and range in size and output. Examples include:

  • Plug-in units: the SHX Range is compact and ultra light with 13 amp sockets. This pull to start, Honda, 4-stroke petrol driven engine has a fuel tank capacity of 7.5 litres and a runtime of approximately seven hours.
  • Low End Units 8kVA to 20kVA: The ALP Range of generators is supplied as open set or housed in a weatherproof and soundproof canopy. It features a 4-stroke water cooled electric start engine.
  • Medium Sized Units 100kFVA to 2000kVA: The AJD Range features a John Deere, 4-stroke
water-cooled electric start engine, chassis with integral bunded fuel tank and can be supplied as either open set or housed.
  • Large Sized Units 100kVA to 2000kVA: The AC Range features a Cummins 4-stroke water
cooled electric start engine, chassis with integral bunded fuel tank and is available as open-set or housed.

Fuel Cells

Our fuel cells run for approximately 5,000 hours which, on average, equates to a lifespan of somewhere between 10 and 20 years. They are commonly used to provide solutions where there is no room available for a generator to fit. Fuel cells are quiet and operate inside the room. They are fuelled by methyl alcohol or hydrogen and will run as long there is fuel available. Our fuel cells require little maintenance and usually an annual inspection is all that is needed to ensure it is running safely and efficiently.

North London cellar installation

This project was undertaken at a converted Victorian warehouse where the customer operated business from the third floor. Initial plans were to place the generator on a flat roof however, after discovering structural problems other cost-effective solutions were more suitable. We installed a 150kVA housed generator, an air inlet attenuator and exhaust duct which allowed the cooling air to escape. Where normally an open-set generator would be used, it was necessary for a housed model to be used due to the damp and cold conditions of the cellar. Approximately 180m of cabling was also installed from the changeover panel situated on the third floor down to the generator sited in the cellar.

Basildon site - installation

This project was for a printing and distributing business that provided customers with services in a three day turnaround time. Therefore it was essential for them to provide back up solutions in the event of power failure. We provided complete project management, supply and installation of equipment. We installed the 350kVA generator inside the warehouse as there wasn’t sufficient space outside. We also installed cabling between the main incomer room to the generator as well as an exhaust pipe, ducting and air attenuators. To view pictures of this project, please visit our website.

UPS - Technical

Our UPS models are available in three types: off-line, interactive, and on-line. Off-line designs feature power that is supplied to the UPS where 'power cleaning' is supplied as it passes through the UPS. In the event of a power failure, an automatic switch draws power from the battery unit. For interactive designs, the 'power cleaning' process is much faster. On-line designs are different as the input power is converted from AC to DC and runs parallel with the battery bank. Output power is then converted back from DC to AC. This type of design does to require a switch as the battery supplies power as soon as mains power stops.

Standby Generators - Technical

Standby generators run at a fixed speed to drive an alternator and provide electricity at the necessary frequency to support electrical equipment. Most generators feature a built-in fuel tank, and can be supplied as either open set or housed in a soundproof and weatherproof canopy for protection. A separate wall mounted changeover panel is installed for standby power applications. This changeover takes power from the mains and the generator to the supported circuits. For day to day operations, in the event of a power failure a signal is sent from the changeover panel to the generator which then automatically starts up.

Software - Technical

Most UPS systems are fitted with a communications port to determine the information such as the incoming and outgoing power and the condition of the UPS. This can provide various essential figures and information needed to maintain the smooth running of the equipment such as the battery-life, quality of mains supply, and more. Other functions include alarm notification and automatic shutdown management. As an alternative solution, a network adaptor or internal network card can prove beneficial as communication does not rely on a single server, monitoring can be carried out anywhere on the network and the UPS can be used remotely.
