ASD Metal Services is the largest independent multi-metals stockholder and distributor in the United Kingdom. With many sites across the country each offering an extensive range of products and processing facilities, ASD provides nationwide coverage. Our personal, local service is backed up by the global purchasing strength facilitated by our membership of the Klöckner & Co. Group. This gives us the unequalled ability to meet and surpass the individual requirements of every one of our customers. ASD is continually finding ways of catering for our customers’ needs by developing new products and processing facilities.
We are also constantly striving to improve the speed and efficiency of our processes so they can benefit from short lead times. This customer-centric approach has enabled ASD to retain its market-leading position in the metals industry. With an unrivalled knowledge across a broad range of product areas, you can rely on ASD for expert advice and support. When you make a purchase from us, you can also be assured of a world class product: all of our processes are subjected to quality management reviews. So for a huge range of metals and a first class metal processing service, make ASD your first port of call.

In addition to electro-zinc coating and iron-zinc coating processes, ASD has the facilities to supply metals hot dipped galvanised. The feedstock for HDG is cold reduced coil that has been through the tandem mill, though not annealed or temper rolled. Before entering the annealing furnace to soften the steel and bring it to the required temperature for dipping, the coil passes through a cleaning furnace or an electrolytic cleaning process. After the dipping process, jets of air blow away the molton zinc to achieve the desired coating weight or thickness. The zinc coating is frozen as it passes through coolers and a quench tank - It then enters a temper mill. To finish the process, the surface is treated with chemicals that reduce storage rust problems and is also covered in a light oil film for further protection.

ASD has developed electro-zinc plated products for use in the autobody industry and for other applications which require high levels of corrosion resistance and a surface that is suitable for painting. The surface of the strip is cleaned using electrochemical and electrolytic processes before it is chemically activated to allow a good ‘take’ on the surface for coating. The strip then passes through zinc plates (or anodes) that are suspended in vertical plating cells through which Zinc sulphate (the electrolyte) is pumped. The strength of the current and the speed at which the coil passes through the cell assembly determines the thickness of the zinc coating. To finish the process, the coil is thoroughly rinsed before a protective treatment is applied.
