The importance of time is an elemental part of mankind's make-up. From the days of the Egyptians, and earlier, when time and the calendar was told by the position of the sun and the moon, to today’s vast range of timepieces - man has monitored the passing of the day and night. Indeed some of the first timepieces, Obelisks, were built as early as 3500 B.C. and their shadows formed a kind of sundial.
