In the early nineties Superior perfected the “rigless” plug and abandonment concept, employing five-man crews cross-trained in mechanical wireline, electric line and pumping services to plug uneconomical wells in the Gulf of Mexico. Although the business was very labor intensive and subject to industry and seasonal cycles, the margins were good enough to sustain growth and encourage management to expand the rigless concept beyond plug and abandonment to other production-related challenges.
