Voith Hydro Wavegen is a world leader in the implementation of wave energy technology. Wavegen operates the world's first commercial scale grid connected wave power plant (LIMPET), located on the island of Islay, Scotland, which is used as a test bed for proving turbine generators, power electronics and control systems. Wavegen's Oscillating Water Column (OWC) technology can be deployed in existing and new breakwaters, purpose built structures and on floating platforms.
Wavegen's technology has the strongest track record in the sector, demonstrating reliability and performance comparable with more established renewable technologies. Wavegen's turbine generators have accumulated over 60,000 generating hours and demonstrate availability of over 95%, showing readiness for commercial projects. The 0.3MW Mutriku breakwater project in the Basque Country is soon to be commissioned whilst RWE npower renewables' fully consented 4MW Siadar Wave Energy Project on the isle of Lewis, Scotland, is being developed.
